APALOM is a project to provide easy access to free (as in speech) 3d models.

The reason for this project is that many game projects have a lack of good graphics - or "just graphics" at all. Programmers often suck at graphic design and so there is a need for a collection of such graphics. 3d models are in particular required by some game projects (I have found myself very often in the position that I need a usable model).

Currently APALOM has models from:

Supported file formats currently:

  • .3ds
  • .ac
  • .md2
  • .md3 (not yet supported, but work in progress)

Requirements to add a model to APALOM:

  • Must be free, i.e. under some open source license (GPL, BSD, ...) or public domain
  • This requirements also applies to all textures the model uses
  • Downloading a texture from the internet that is said to be "free" is NOT sufficient. The source must explicitly tell you the license (and it must have the right to put the file under that license)
  • Downloading a texture from the internet and then modifying it is NOT sufficient (as you don't own the copyright then).
