Introduction

Boson is a real-time strategy game, in the vain of Star Craft TM or Command & Conquer TM, which utilizes contemporary military tactics and weapontry to create a vivid, immersive gaming experience. The following proposal is the result of addressing what I consider to be the main concern of any video game story: how can the gameplay and production design be best realized in narrative form? I do not feel that this is a difficult problem to overcome, especially given Boson's solid engine and clear vision.

This story draws heavily on military history and political intrigue to convince the user that Boson exists in a complete world, much like our own. Military history research enabled me to match realistic battle plans and scenarios with the design of Boson's units, structures, and landscapes. And the political elements achieve another level of realism, which coincide with the purely military aspects. The political intrigue is the drama and necessary foundation for the game. Tensions continue to rise until all-out war erupts, even as the true motivations for the conflict are not fully understood. With as many characters and different motivations as there are represented in my proposal, the storytelling does not bog down gameplay or distract the user from the in-game experience. In fact, just the opposite is true, and I hope you will agree. The narrative reinforces the feel and design, just as the mechanics support the story.
