Available jobs at Boson:

This page is intended to list some jobs and tasks that are available, along with the skills which are necessary to work on them. If you can think of any other jobs, you can add them to this list.
If you're looking for something to do, you can pick an item from this list or contact the developers for more jobs or more precise descriptions.

  • Modeling - creating in-game unit and object models.
    You should be able to do low-poly modeling in your favorite 3d modeling application and save it as .3ds file (support for other file formats might be added in the future).
    Most needed 3d models are:
    • Important: take a look at story sides page for specific missing models. Creating any of the models listed there would be very helpful!
    • Civilian models
      • Houses (both small houses and big urban houses)
      • Outbuildings and other structures that might be around the house (e.g. well)
      • Factories
      • Cars, buses
      • Some interesting urban models, e.g. monuments or ...
      • Etc...
    • Tree models (very low-poly)
    • Other common nature models, e.g. boulders, bushes, etc. Those also have to be very low-poly.
    • Soldier model (has to be animated, probably very difficult to do)
    • Alternatively, you can try to optimize current models (e.g. try to decrease the facecount, remove faces that are never seen, etc) or even replace them completely.

  • Sounds - creating sound effect for Boson.
    You should know how to create sound effects, adding them to units is quite easy.
    Maybe some sounds can be taken from other GPL-projects as well...
  • Map making - creating beautiful new maps for Boson.
    You should know how to use Boson's map editor, probably some skills in an image editing app (to make better heightmaps) won't hurt either.
  • Balancing units - tweak unit properties towards the perfection winking smiley
    You should play Boson, find a unit/weapon which is too strong/weak/cheap/expensive/etc and then modify this property. Test again. Repeat...
  • Taking screenshots - taking new exciting screenshots of Boson.
    You should just be playing Boson and pressing Ctrl+G once in a while winking smiley
  • Reporting bugs - testing Boson and reporting bugs at bugs.kde.org
    You should play CVS version of Boson once in a while and test it for bugs and missing features and report them.
  • Writing helper scripts - writing helper scripts for AI (e.g. Unit class).
    You should know Python and Boson's scripting API.
  • AI writing - coding and improving Boson's AI.
    You should know Python and Boson's scripting API and also know something about AI coding.
  • GUI icons - making icons for GUI (e.g. attack, move, stop, etc).
    You should know how to use an image editor and should have some skill at creating icons.
  • Coding - coding different things in Boson.
    You should know C++, skills in Qt/KDE/OpenGL are also useful.
    Coding jobs include:
    • Improving rendering engine, e.g. making it faster, adding new features.
    • Improving unit's tactical AI (making it react better to events)
    • bugs.kde.org
    • Ask developers for more jobs
