Statement

The Boson Project has a unique oppurtunity to showcase the best interactive/entertainment software development the open source community is capable of. I've been following the development team's work for a number of years and feel strongly that with continued effort Boson will not disappoint. I know it's open source but I feel privledged contributing to this project. Thank you in advance for considering this option for the official Boson story. There's a great deal of information here, and updates and additions will be made on a continuing basis. REMEMBER: To varying degrees ALL the information that follows contains "spoilers," or key information that will "ruin the game for you." Sections that contain many spoilers or are entirely made up of them or contain a plot-twist, etc. have been highlighted as such, just to warn you. I've posted this story option for criticism, but if you're the kind of person that doesn't like spoilers, then these warnings are for you. That said, allow me to quickly outline the format of all that follows:

  1. Questions (this page, below): This area has been set-aside so users/developers/etc. may ask questions regarding anything which pertains to this version of the Boson story. Also, I will post questions of my own (as I have already done), which are open for anyone to answer/debate.
  2. Comments (this page, below Questions): This area has been set-aside for general comments and criticism.
  3. List of Locations: A list of key named locations found in the story, including names of states, rivers, cities, and so on. You'll find a General Map here, too. This section will be expanded to contain more detailed information regarding the terrain of each location, to assist level editors.
  4. Cast of Characters: A list of main and supporting characters within the story. This section will be expanded with detailed character descriptions.
  5. Introduction: A statement highlighting the style and form of the story.
  6. Back Story: A general description of the continent, its inhabitants, and so on, in addition to the narrative describing the events that lead up to the in-game campaigns/missions, including a timeline, history, and more maps.
  7. Battle Plan: Information regarding each side's initial plan of offense/defense, including maps and objectives. Consider this an outline of how each side's campaign begins and what they hope to achieve.
  8. Campaigns: Detailed descriptions of individual missions/objectives, key events, and possible cinema cut-scenes for either side's game.
  9. Endings: Detailed descriptions of possible endings for either side's campaign and the game as a whole.

Questions

  1. What is the significance of the game's name, "Boson?"
  2. How strong of a role should individual characters play in the campaigns/missions? Should they have large roles, even playable roles, as in Star Craft TM? Or smaller to non-existent roles as in Homeworld TM or Age of Empires TM?

Comments

  1. Questions/Considerations taken from Boson Draft2:
    1. Is oil exporting thing ok? It would justify having oil towers on maps in Boson. Oil is one of many commodities sought after by the various political factions in the game, but in this version of the story the game cannot simply be reduced to a quarrel over oil or oil rights. On the one hand justification for oil towers on maps in-game is found within the narrative, the political contest (see Back Story), and on the other hand the presence of oil towers goes unexplained and is merely a "game-ism," much like the Refinery/Extractor/Assimilator in Star Craft TM.
    2. We need some justification for Marsera's attack. It doesn't even have to be a valid one (e.g. Marsera may be lying), but there has to be _some_ justification - these days. While this version of the Boson story is not a rewrite, revision, or extension of Draft2, Marsera (see Draft2) and Isparta (see Back Story) are analogous. Justification for Isparta's attacks and occupation can be found in the Back Story section. Their motivations are more political and Janus-faced, more tactical. It's not as simple as "they're evil and must be stopped."
    3. Canesia is surrounded by sea, so e.g. USA (having strong naval force) could just surround Marsera and attack from the sea (e.g. from aircraft carriers). We need something to prevent that. In this version of the Boson story the conflict takes place on the continent of Tyrrha. Tyrrha is not an "island," but more closely resembles the area surrounding the Gulf of Mexico or the Indian Ocean. While, strategically speaking, there is still the possibility of a naval attack, the gulf is utilized as a beachhead for ground force attack only. Naval bombardment from off the coast is impractical given that Isparta is in-land, as is Attleborough, the country they eventually occupy. Any naval force is exculsively part of the cinemas which support the Back Story and the Tyrrhan Confederation's campaign (see Campaigns). For more specific information see Introduction and Battle Plan.
